I have plenty of experience sleeping. In bed, in meetings, in countless classes, and as I get older, during any sporting event which starts after 9:00. When it comes to resting, I’m trained in a variety of methods, with varying degrees of success in each. This weekend, I had my first setback.
Saturday, December 11, I woke up speaking absolute gibberish. Granted, I have said some things in the past which could make you scratch your head, but my wife claims that this was a Hall-of-Fame worthy performance. Do you remember the scene in “Bruce Almighty” when Bruce makes the anchor speak nonsense? My experience was much less amusing. Especially for my wife. When it became obvious that I was experiencing a seizure, she had the presence of mind to call 9-1-1 and then the games began.
I don’t remember anything for the next few minutes, but I am grateful for every Medic and EMT who treated me before I spent some quality time in Waynesboro Hospital. An MRI proved my high school guidance counselor wrong; there is something inside my head. As a result, I was transferred to Hershey Medical Center and after consulting with neurosurgeons, we have decided to do a biopsy on Thursday.
Since then, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from family, friends and co-workers. I am worried that I will miss a message and forget to respond, so this could be a good solution for keeping in touch. If you are uncomfortable with my candor, I apologize, but the more you know, the more you can support me.
Yes, even now, it’s all about ME.
I’ll leave you with this:
1. If someone means something to you, tell them. Today.
2. You can’t always choose your situation. You choose how to handle it.
3. Double up your hospital gowns. Nobody needs to see that. They’re sick enough already.
Keeping the faith
Garnet

GARRRRNNNNEEETTTTT. Darnit (hey, I made a rhyme), very bummed to hear about what is going on. I can only guess that you may have needed some rest and this was the only way your body will be allowed to catch up with itself. Bodies work in funny ways like that.
I appreciate you sharing your experiences. You have a support system near and far, and we want to know how you are doing.
I know you are in the hands of some of the finest people I know. You are going to kick this whatever in da butt.
Next time you update your blog, please include picture of you in hospital gown. need to laugh.
I’m glad you are using humor. It always helps me to find the humor in things. Even if they suck. Laughing helps.
I will be checking in my friend.
oh yeah….THE GIANTS RULE.

I am a little behind getting this information about you, but my thoughts and prayers are with you. Let me know if you need anything.

Hello Garnet~
You do not know me but we are kind of related since Amy is like my sister. I also know Momma Pat as well (we used to share a common Mary Englebreit fetish; weird – I know). So I guess that you are kind of like a step-brother to me.
Anyway, I just wanted to say ‘hi’ and let you know that I am thinking about you and that you and your family are in my prayers.
P.S. I love your blog; you should consider doing this for a living!

Garnet, it takes a special person to make others laugh when we want to cry for you. I do want to correct you on one thing….As a nurse, I can assure you that some of us nurses thrived on those openings in patient gowns. It made going to work worth the effort (provided you wasn’t on a geriatric floor). Keep the faith.

Hi Garnet, I really appreciate your candor – for some reason it takes the “sting” out of a bad situation. I/we have been praying up a storm for you and Trish and the “Lady’s Man”! Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
Peace & Love,

Nice to know you still have your humor!! I know you have a great family to help and support, though if you-or they- need any help with anything, please don’t hesitate to let me know. You and your family has meant so much to me during my life. I will be praying that God heals you as He sees fit. BTW, when you are through with all this, maybe you need to start shopping around that ‘Garnet & Mary Lee Show’ idea that you had years ago! I think it would be a hit!!! Take care & God Bless you and the family!

Garnet,
Not sure I’ve even seen you since you were quite young. I am a cousin of some variety: your grandfather Bill Smith and my grandmother were brother and sister. But I was shocked–as were you–to hear of your turn of events this week. I am so glad to hear that you are home and doing well at the moment. I am praying for a full recovery and keeping you and your family in my heart. By the way, I found your recipe for toast online and am thinking of serving it for Christmas……

Garnet –
I don’t know if you ever knew I have had epilepsy for about 25 years.
My life has always been pretty normal, with the exception of a ‘pre-existing condition.’
A couple of years ago a friend of mine had a similar experience to yours. There was a sudden seizure, lots of neurologists, some surgery and tests, and it’s 2 years later. She has found the right seizure medication for her, and she is back to normal. No doubt there were many scary times for her and her family. I just wanted you to know…
And I’ll be praying for you, too.

Garnet,
I’ve heard of writers doing extreme things for good material…but you are taking things a bit far, aren’t ya?? In all seriousness, you, Trish, and Will are in my thoughts and prayers and I am keeping the faith big time for you, buddy. As this first little blog just proves, you have much more writing to do and many more laughs to provide.

Garnet,
Why would I not be surprised that your sense of humor gets you through a bumpy time. Like MAtt says when flying. Just a pothole in the sky but soon smooth sailing. We are spreading the positive vibes all over for you and getting you on many prayer lists. Hard to wait i’m sure for the results but keep us infomed and we’ll keep you and your family in our prayers. Do you need a clothes pin for that gown!!!!! be careful. Keep what happens at Hershey at Hershey . Oops. That was Las VEgas. Sorry.

I always knew you were special and had a LOT more going on “up there” than most. I just wish you didn’t have to prove it so much. Glad you’re in good hands at Hershey. Laughter is the best medicine, which means you’ll be excellent. You’ve always been so candidly funny, this too shall pass. Best wishes, and many hopeful prayers.
